Interesting, how the only time you hear trucks rumbling by at 40 to 50 miles an hour in Barrow is when there's an emergency.
Nothing too serious, fortunately, though it did involve a friend of my mother's and Mella's. Apparently she got into her car, tried to start it, and it started smoking, eventually catching [...]

Another new icon, though this one's special – it's a new default icon. Oooooo, nifty.
I'm not quite sure what prompted the change from my usual “Nu?” expression. Perhaps the fact that I'm doing some serious work regarding my life. Perhaps just the fact that Barrow's a somewhat serious place. Perhaps the [...]

I'm honestly not sure exactly how this happened, but my mother and I went from fighting each other over something stupid (again) to talking about the many things I'm afraid of. This might sound like an odd connection, but she was finally able to drop the sanctimonius “I'm always right” attitude long enough to [...]

Am at the library, temporarily taking over the front desk because we're shorthanded. Looking around at the various middle-school-and-younger kids on the computers and whatnot, mostly Inupiaq, it suddenly strikes me exactly how many of them have signs of fetal alcohol syndrome – usually characterized most obviously by a flattened area between the eyes, [...]

The good news is, I have a job. The bad news is, I have a job.
Apparently one of the librarians is quitting, and they want to hire me to replace her. It's where I want to work, it's good pay, what's the problem, right? Well, the punchline is…she's the children's librarian. [...]

The fun thing about having a DVD stereo with a subwoofer in the living room is that I can be sitting in my bedroom and still hear every word/stomping sound/musical note from Return of the King, including my mother's various cheers and chuckles.
I have a feeling I'm going to have a headache tonight…

4:40 AM, the phone rings.
Nice and light outside, if a bit gray. My watch broke yesterday in some unpleasantness with my mother. I don't have a clock in my room except the two computers. My laptop's off, so I check the new computer for the time – which hasn't been set properly [...]

My mother and I are currently reading The Architecture of All Abundance, by Lenedra J. Carroll. The name probably doesn't ring any bells, but she's actually the mother (and financial manager) of Jewel, the singer from Alaska. Her book has some rather interesting ideas about running one's life – for much of her [...]

Had my first dental appointment in a couple of years this morning. I swear I saw the dentist visibly wince when he looked in my mouth. See, my teeth and I pretty much have this “don't ask, don't tell” policy – they don't bother me, I don't bother them. But then some [...]
